Santo Domingo, Oct 15 (Prensa Latina) International government officials, experts and representatives of civil society and the business sector are participating in the 12th Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean starting today.
Organized by the Economic Commission for Latin American and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Dominican government, the meeting will be held at a hotel in the capital until Oct. 18.
The meeting will address equity and womenâ?Ös empowerment, and gender inequalities in the digital economy, which determine womenâ?Ös personal and professional development and countriesâ?Ö progress in the new technological scene.
According to the eventâ?Ös agenda, Dominican President Danilo Medina, UN Women Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, and ECLAC executive secretary Alicia Barcena are expected to participate in the opening, among other important figures.
As a basis for debate, Barcena will present the document "Women in the Digital Economy: Breaking through the Equality Threshold."
The agenda includes roundtables, panel discussions and side events, the latter organized by other United Nations agencies and civil-society organizations.
The Dominican Republic is hosting this conference for the first time, which started in Cuba in 1977.
