Looking overseas for parallels to America's government shutdown, the Washington Post found one foreign precedent: Australia.
The former colony's government fell apart in 1975 after the opposition-controlled Senate refused to pass a funding bill because it thought the government was spending too much. That's when it got weird.
The queen's official representative in Australia, the Governor-General, fired the nation's elected leader, Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, and appointed a replacement who passed the funding bill.
Then Governor-General John Kerr dissolved the rest of Parliament. Australia held fresh elections and started from scratch. The Washington Post's Max Fisher finishes his account of this bizarre interlude with: "Maybe, if we ask nicely, Britain will take us back?"
