CONAKRY, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- The European Union Electoral Observer Mission (MOEUE) in Guinea is on Saturday expected to deploy 24 long-term observers in Guinea's interior provinces, in the run-up to the West African country's Sept. 24 legislative elections.
A statement issued on Thursday by the mission said the observers will help to evaluate the electoral process in the country's eight provinces.
During the 2010 presidential elections in Guinea, the EU deployed 23 long-term observers in the interior of the country.
Recently, an EU mission visited Guinea to prepare for the deployment of observers.
The upcoming polls are key to the restoration of stability in the country, which suffered a coup in December 2008 and violence over the legislative vote.
After rounds of dialogue, the electoral commission finally set the date on Sept. 24 for a total of 1,800 candidates to contest for the 114 seats in parliament.
Guinea's political parties kicked off election campaigns on Saturday to seek support until Sept. 22.
The legislative elections were due within six months after the presidential elections in November 2010. The vote has never taken place because of tensions between the rival parties.
