Jakarta, Oct 3 (Prensa Latina) Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono described the corruption at the highest government and judicial circles as "terminal," amid a scandal after the arrest of Head of the Constitutional Court (CC) Akil Mochtar.
Officers from the Corruption Eradication Commission carried out a raid today at the house of the judge, who allegedly accepted a bribe from politicians equivalent to $261,000 USD, money with dubious origins that was seized during the arrest operation, The Jakarta Globe newspaper noted.
The CC is an important institution, playing an essential role in the administration of the country, stated the leader. He warned that if embezzlement affects the court, the nationâ?Ös democratic system could be undermined.
The Corruption Eradication Commission arrested the judge during an operation that included the arrest of one of the leaders of the Golkar Party, Chairun Nissa, Governor of Gunung Mas district Hambit Bintih and two entrepreneurs identified as CN and DH.
The CC, comprised of nine members, is as powerful as the Supreme Court of Justice and supervises the decisions regarding constitutional rights, disputes over elections and the authority of state-owned institutions.
