SC Orders to Hold Presidential Elections on July 30 Pak Tribune

Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered Election Commission of Pakistan to hold presidential election on July 30, 2013, almost a week earlier than original schedule. Originally ECP announced August 6, 2013 as day to hold presidential elections.

Fearing that considerable number of legislators will not be able to cast their votes because of their religious commitments government approached ECP for a change of schedule. However, election commission refused to entertain the request and insisted on holding presidential elections according to the schedule.

Refusal from ECP regarding change of schedule prompted Government to approach Supreme Court of Pakistan with the same request. Senior PML-N leader senator Raja Zafr-ul-Haq filed a petition seeking apex court to give orders to ECP for a change of schedule. After brief hearing on Wednesday, Supreme Court ordered ECP to hold presidential elections on July 30, 2013 instead of 6th August.
